Kashmir valley was cut off from the rest of the country on Wednesday following fresh snowfall, which forced suspension of traffic along Srinagar-Jammu national highway and cancellation of all incoming and outgoing flights in the afternoon, official sources said.

The traffic on the highway, the only road linking Kashmir with the rest of the country was suspended as a precautionary measure in view of heavy snowfall in the area around Jawahar Tunnel -- the gateway to Kashmir valley, they said.

However, the road is being cleared for the Srinagar-bound vehicles, which left for their destination in the morning, they added.

Two flights operated on Wednesday morning but rest of the incoming and outgoing flights, scheduled for the day, were cancelled owing to bad weather.

A light snowfall began in Srinagar early in the morning turning heavy in the afternoon after stopping for a while. Besides Srinagar, reports of snowfall were also received from all the districts of the Valley, including famous hill resorts of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Yousmarg.

Two to six inches of fresh snow had accumulated on the ground in the upper reaches of the valley where snowfall ranging between five to 15 feet was recorded during the past week.

Heavy snowfall was continuing in all parts of the Valley, including the summer capital till last reports came in, the sources added.
