Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati on Wednesday accused the Samajwadi Party of fomenting trouble in the state and warned that stern action would be taken against those found involved in violence.

"It is not the Samajwadi Party which is ruling the state. It is the Bahujan Samaj Party government in power. We will not allow the rule of goons and anti-socials in the state," Mayawati said.

Her comments came as SP activists protested against the alleged police action on a group of students who disrupted a function in a college on Tuesday demanding elections to the student union.

Severe action will be taken against those involved in disturbing the law and order in the state, Mayawati said, claiming people arrested from the SP protest on Tuesday included 'goons and anti-socials who have serious criminal records'.

"Their (SP's) people tried to create terror and a number of goons were (involved) in that," she alleged adding, her government will not tolerate any kind of disturbance to the peace in the state.

Hundreds of SP workers led by party youth wing president Akhilesh Yadav tried to force their way to the assembly to hold a dharna when they were stopped by a strong contingent of the police near the SP office on Wednesday morning.

They were protesting Tuesday's incident when several SP leaders, including state unit president Shivpal Singh Yadav, were allegedly manhandled.
