The White House has refused to comment on the general election in Pakistan, where opposition parties PPP and PML-N emerged as the largest parties on Tuesday, saying it was waiting for the final result of the polls.

With results out for 248 of the 269 National Assembly seats, for which polling took place on Monday, slain former premier Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party bagged 85 seats while PML-N of former premier Nawaz Sharif was at the second position with 65 seats.

"For many weeks, almost months now, since the announcement that there would be elections on February 18, what we have encouraged is for people to be able to express their vote freely, and for this election to inspire confidence in people about their government," White House Press Secretary Dana Perino said.

"Until we have more of a final result, I'll decline to comment on those," she said.
