At least eight people were killed and 80 injured on Monday in poll-related violence during the key parliamentary elections in Pakistan, caretaker interior minister Hamid Nawaz Khan said.

He said six people were killed in the politically-crucial central Punjab province while two others died in the restive North West Frontier Province bordering Afghanistan.

The minister said 80 people were also injured in clashes among supporters of various political parties.

There were no reports of any terrorist attacks during the polls, which were the first general elections after the 2002 exercise.

The government had deployed 81,000 troops and nearly 4,00,000 policemen, who were on high alert for the polling.

The violent campaign that was marked by the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and a series of suicide bombings resulted in low voter turnout.
