The United Progressive Alliance government on Wednesday won a vote on the Unorganised Workers Bill in the Lok Sabha. There were 107 votes in favour of the bill, while 90 Parliamentarians voted against it.

The Left parties had taken the UPA completely by surprise when they pressed for a division of votes on the bill today.

The long-pending bill is meant to provide social security net to the large numbers of unorganised workers in the country.

Many changes were suggested to the original bill to make it more effective, but the government was not keen on implementing the changes.

The bill was expected to be taken in the current session of Parliament, but the Left's move caught everyone by surprise, given the woeful numbers present in the House.
