Advani hails Amarnath deal

August 31, 2008 17:53 IST

With the Amarnath agitators calling off their agitation in Jammu on Sunday after successful talks with the Governor's panel, senior BJP leader L K Advani expressed satisfaction at the outcome and said the prime minister heeded to his request of not to act under pressure of the separatists.

Advani said that from the initial reports received, it appeared the agreement reached was broadly satisfactory to the Sangarsh Samiti.

"I feel this issue should be recognised in its true form. As I wrote to the Prime Minister, this is not a Hindu versus Muslim or Jammu versus valley issue," Advani told reporters on the sidelines of a rally in New Delhi.

"I had asked the prime minister not to surrender to the pressure built by separatists. He agreed with this analysis and said in his reply that under no circumstances will he take a decision under pressure of separatists," he said.

Advani said he had not read the full text of the agreement, but was satisfied with the outcome.

The Sri Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti (SAYSS) called off its agitation today after the Jammu and Kashmir government agreed to hand over forest land to the Sri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) temporarily for three months when the yatra is on.
