Auto-rickshaw drivers across Maharashtra on Tuesday called off their strike after Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh gave the assurance that a committee will be set up to look into their complaints regarding the introduction of electronic meters.

"The chief minister has assured the union members that a committee headed by the State Transport Minister Ganesh Naik would be formed to discuss the issue of electronic meters with them," a spokesperson in the CM's office said.

The committee is expected to submit its report in the next two months after which a decision will be taken on whether to introduce the electronic meters, he said.

After the meeting, union leaders assured the chief minister that they would withdraw the strike and services would be restored at the earliest, the spokesperson said.

The Bombay Auto men's Union and other bodies had called for a three-day strike, beginning today, to protest against the state government's proposal to introduce electronic meters.
