The Special Investigation Team, constituted by the Supreme Court to investigate 14 post-Godhra riots cases of 2002, commenced their investigation by visiting Naroda Patia and Gulbarg society on Tuesday.

The five-member team headed by former CBI chief R K Raghavan spent almost an entire morning visiting the sites, sources in the police department said.

The team, which include former director general of police of Uttar Pradesh C D Sathpathy and three IPS officers from Gujarat -- Geeta Johri, Shivanand Jha and Ashish Bhatia -- had an extensive meeting at Meghaninagar police station after visiting the contentious sites, police sources said.

In the Naroda Patia riot case, 89 people mainly of the minority community were killed on February 28, 2002.

While in Gulbarg society, 38 people were killed including ex-Congress MP Ehsan Jafri on the same day.

On March 26, the Supreme Court had directed the state government to set up an SIT within 10 days to "inquire and investigate" the post-Godhra riot cases.

The SIT was also asked to investigate the Sabarmati train carnage where the S6 coach of the train was burned, leaving 59 dead.

The SIT was in Gandhinagar on Monday to check out the logistic arrangement made by the state government for the team.

The other cases that the team will investigate include Naroda Gaon, Sardarpura, Odh and Deepda Darwaja.

The team has to submit its report to the apex court within three months.
