The Andhra Pradesh police headquarters on Thursday received an anonymous letter warning about a possible terror strike during procession of Ganesh idols in the city on September 25 to mark the end of Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

The letter, written in English and addressed to the Director General of Police M A Basith, said terrorists were "hatching a conspiracy to inflict major damages and create large scale disturbances".

The unidentified informant said one Zakir, a resident of Hafeezbaba Nagar in the old city having links with Bangladesh-based terror outfit Harkat-ul-Jihadi Islami , was entrusted with the job of carrying out attacks targeting government offices and other public properties.

The letter contained some details about the "plans of terrorists" and warned that "sufficient groundwork" has already been made and "major strikes" could take place during the procession with Ganesh idols.

The warning comes against the backdrop of twin bombings that shook the city on August 25, claiming 43 lives.

"We are examining the contents (of the letter) and checking their veracity. There is no need for panic. We have put in place adequate security measures to maintain law and order," the DGP said.
