Over 90 per cent students of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) have vacated their hostels before the end of the 48-hour deadline given by the varsity authorities.

"The process of vacating the hostels is peaceful," AMU spokesman Rahat Abrar said on Wednesday, adding that the authorities had made special arrangements for transportation of the students by road and rail.

The university was closed sine die on Monday following violence after a student was killed inside the campus.
Meanwhile, the students' union president of the university, Nafees Ahmed, strongly criticised the decision to close the institution sine die.

"The decision was taken without taking the students into confidence," he said, adding that the authorities had failed miserably to apprehend the situation and take preventive measures.

Violence rocked the varsity campus after Mazhar Naeem, a BSc second year student and resident of Aftab hostel was attacked near his hostel by unidentified persons on Sunday night.

Naeem was rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College where he was declared brought dead.
