Militants ambushed security convoys at two places and made an abortive bid to blow up a Central Reserve Police Force picket, while two ultras surrendered in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, official sources said.

The convoy of Rashtriya Rifles was fired upon by militants at Spurnag in Handwara area of Kupwara district, but no one was injured in the ensuing encounter, the sources said.

The convoy was on its way to a forward area from Baramulla, they said adding, several Border Security Forces vehicles were also passing through the village at the time of the attack.

The whole area was immediately cordoned off and a hunt was launched to nab the ultras, they said.

Militants also attacked an army convoy at Model town Sopore in Baramulla district.

No one was injured in the brief gunbattle, the sources said adding, the ultras had taken up positions in nearby orchards and fled in the face of retaliation by the troops coming from Selu village in Sopore.

Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit claimed responsibility for both the attacks.

A live grenade was detected by CRPF troops outside their picket at Mominabad in Batmaloo area in central Srinagar.
