Amidst the furore over Ram Setu, the Bharatiya Janata government in Uttarakhand has decided to introduce the subject as part of the school syllabus.

A committee of experts is being set up to gather details regarding the Ram Setu, known as Adam's Bridge, for students up to the class 12 level, officials said on Friday.

They said Uttarakhand would become the first state in the country to teach chapters on the bridge -- which according to legend was built by Lord Ram's 'vanar sena' -- in the school curriculum.

The chapters would deal with the geographical and seismic conditions surrounding the bridge off the Rameshwaram coast in Tamil Nadu and also dwell on stories of Lord Ram, his journey to Lanka to rescue wife Sita and the vanquishing of its demon king Ravana.

It would also contain information on how Adam's Bridge was helpful in protecting Kerala from the tsunami that struck Indian Ocean rim countries on December 26, 2005, the officials said.
