Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has asked the Crime Investigation Department to probe the lynching of 10 suspected thieves in Vaishali district.

Kumar, who reviewed the situation in the aftermath of the bludgeoning to death of 10 persons in savage retribution for alleged frequent thefts at Dhelpurwa village with senior officials of the Home and police department late Thursday night, has asked the CID to probe the case, sources in CM's office said on Friday.

The chief minister has directed CID Additional Director General Yashwant Malhotra to camp at the site along with forensic experts from Patna. He will submit a report to the chief minister in four days, the sources said.

IG (Headquarters) Anil Sinha will conduct a simultaneous inquiry into administrative lapses leading to the brutal killings, they said, adding that the government has decided to bring to justice the perpetrators of the crime.

An FIR was registered against 300 odd unknown persons in connection with the incident on Thursday.

Chief Secretary A K Chaudhary, Director General of Police A R Sinha, Home secretary Afzal Amanullah and IG Headquarters Anil Sinha attended the meeting past midnight.

Meanwhile, the chief minister has convened a special meeting on Saturday to review a spurt in cases of people taking law into their hands.

Bihar is not new to extra-judicial torture of criminals with scores of them blinded by police in Bhagalpur district in the early 1980s.

In a grim reminder of it, a mob had gouged out the eyes of three young men in Nawada district on Monday for snatching a motorcycle.

A youth, who had snatched a gold chain from a woman, was severely beaten up by a mob at Nathnagar in Bhagalpur on August 28. The police too had joined in the torture and dragged the youth tied to a motorcycle on the road triggering widespread condemnation and accusation of human rights violation.
