J&K: Mentally-challenged boy shot dead

A mentally-challenged boy was shot dead by security personnel after he allegedly tried to intrude into a J&K army camp in the wee hours on Friday.

A 16-year-old boy was killed when he allegedly tried to sneak into an army camp at Watlab in Sopore area of Baramulla district despite warning shots by the sentry to stop, sources said.

They said the sentry had to shoot the 'intruder' as he continued to climb the fencing around the camp at around 0100 am.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased was a mentally-challenged youth from Pulwama district in south Kashmir, the sources said adding, a police party has been dispatched to his native village to ascertain his identity.

In another incident, militants attacked a youth as he was coming out of a mosque after night prayers at Janwari in Sopore area on Thursday night.

They said Firdous Ahmad Mir, a shopkeeper by profession, was rushed to a hospital where he was declared 'brought dead' by the doctors.

Meanwhile, local residents of Haran village in Handwara area of Kupwara district foiled an attempt by over a dozen armed gunmen to kidnap an 18-year-old boy from a marriage party.

Mudassir Ahmad Najar was saved by timely intervention of the women who surrounded him and did not allow the unidentified gunmen to take him away.
