International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohammed ElBaradei on Tuesday inaugurated Bhabhatron-II, an indigenously developed advanced computerised telecobalt machine for the treatment of cancer.

ElBaradei, who is on a three-day trip to India, visited the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai where he inaugurated Bhabhatron-II at the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer here.

Later, Bhabhatron was officially handed over to the director general of IAEA by the Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Dr Anil Kakodkar.

The machine, worth Rs two crore, was donated to the IAEA by the Department of Atomic Energy. It will be sent to the Can Tho General Hospital in Vietnam as part of the measures to promote peaceful uses of atomic energy.

The Centre will provide further support in the machine's commissioning, maintenance, and training.

ElBaradei also visited the electron beam facility of DAE in Vashi at Navi Mumbai.

The DAE had signed a tripartite agreement in Vienna last month with the IAEA's programme of action for Cancer Therapy to donate Bhabhatron II to Vietnam, Tata Memorial Centre Director Dr K A Dinshaw said.
