An activist of the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist was killed and four received bullet injuries on Monday in an exchange of fire between activists of the Marxist party and a Trinamool Congress-backed outfit protesting West Bengal government's move to acquire farmland in troubled Nandigram.

The deceased has been identified as Manas Das, an active local committee member of CPI-M, East Midnapore district Superintendent of Police G Srinivas told reporters in Nandigram.

Monday's casualty took the number of the killed in the renewed violence to two. An old woman had died in the clashes on Sunday.

Of the injured, three belonged to Bhumi Uchched Pratirodh Committee supported by Trinamool and another to CPI-M, the SP said.

The CPI-M has called a 12-hour bandh at Khejuri, adjacent to Nandigram on Tuesday in protest against the incident.

Alarmed by the recurring violence, the local administration has deployed additional police forces.

Clashes have been continuing since Sunday at Ranichak and Hatengabari in Nandigram amidst claims and counter-claims of abduction, police sources said.

The SP said no policeman was injured in the firing. An earlier report quoting officials had said a policeman, identified as Ajoy Das, suffered bullet injuries and was rushed to Nandigram Primary Health Centre.
