Under attack from all sides over the recapture of Nandigram, the Communist Party of India-Marxist on Tuesday responded to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remarks on it saying, "Prime Minister is concerned, we are also concerned over the situation there."

"The prime minister has also talked of restoration of normalcy. We also want normalcy to be restored. But certainly peace cannot be established in a day or two," CPI-M central committee member Shyamal Chakraborty said in a statement in Kolkata.

"The whole area was in turmoil for 11 months. What is needed is political initiatives. The state government is trying. We are also trying," he said.

The CPI-M had earlier said that hundreds of villagers owing allegiance to them were not allowed entry there for the past 11 months by the Trinamool Congress-led Bhumi Ucched Committee.

Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacherya had publicly defended the recapture of Nandigram saying that opposition parties had been "paid back in their own coin".

The prime minister on Tuesday asked the West Bengal government to take note of the "spontaneous outpouring" of grief and anguish over the Nandigram incidents and undertake "necessary steps" to restore confidence of the people through effective deployment of security forces.
