As many as 10 states, including six in the North-East, are yet to set up a Human Rights Commission.

This was stated by Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal in Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The minister said that the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura in Northeast and Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand and Uttrakhand have not set up the Human Rights Commission.

The Centre has issued advisories from time-to-time to all these states, he said and added that the states had generally cited paucity of funds and lesser number of complaints of human rights that does not justify setting up a full-fledged commission.

Bihar has notified setting up of a human rights commission but has neither been able to appoint a chairperson nor members yet, he said.
