Hours after assuming office, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Monday directed bureaucrats to tone up the administration and set a month's deadline for them to ensure complaint-free distribution of ration cards to eligible people.

"My government will set out guidelines to officials on implementation of development works after I seek a vote of confidence on November 23. I expect results. Not excuses. Please bear this in mind and try to live up to my expectations," he told bureaucrats.

Addressing a meeting of heads of various departments, he said the process of issuing new ration cards to the poor and identification of beneficiaries under 'Sandhya Suraksha' (old-age pension scheme) should be completed in a month.

Yeddyurappa said he would like to hold a two-day session with officials, away from the city, to discuss programme implementation and the impediments they faced. The new chief minister dropped hints at decentralising the Janata Darshan, with ministers in-charge of respective districts to hold it at least once in a month.

"Bhagaydalakshmi Baaramma (Insurance scheme for girl child) and Sandhya Suraksha are my pet programmes. Ensure that they are implemented without any laxity," he said at the meeting.
