Gunshots were heard from Maheshpur as an uneasy calm prevailed in Nandigram on Friday with paramilitary Eastern Frontier Rifles and police doing patrol rounds in the violence-hit village.

The gunfire was heard in the morning from Maheshpur, which the Communist Party of India-Marxist had failed to recapture from the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee, police said adding, no casualty was reported.

Some shops reopened after a long gap, as villagers thronged a marketplace at Tekhalibazar where a weekly mandi was held on Thursday after about six months.

A police camp, temporarily withdrawn from Tekhalibazar after an EFR personnel was injured in firing by the warring sides on November 6, was set up again.
