Violence erupted for the second consecutive day on Monday, with villagers trying to demolish the boundary wall of the Tata Motors' small car plant and attacking the police when they intervened.

A 250-strong mob of villagers, under the banner of 'Krishi Jami Raksha Committee', a Trinamool Congress-backed body fighting acquisition of farmland for industry, tried to attack the boundary wall.

When the police intervened the protestors hurled bricks at them, after which a lathicharge took place.

"Police chased away the mob with lathis after they tried to break down the wall of the plant," West Bengal IGP (Law and Order) Raj Kanojia told PTI in Kolkata.

He said a circle inspector was injured in the head in the brickbatting. The situation was now under control, he said.

There was no report of any arrest.
