Maharashtra bans CBSE sex education books

Announcing a ban on sex education books of the CBSE syllabus in Maharashtra, the state government on Friday said there was no plan to introduce the subject in school syllabus.

The announcement was made by Minister of State for School Education Hasan Mushrif, while replying to a calling-attention notice by Rajendra Patni (Shiv Sena), Shobha Phadanvis (Bharatiya Janata Party) and others.

The minister also announced cancellation of the proposed introduction of the 'adolescence life skills' programme, which was to be introduced from the next academic year.

Action would be intitiated on sex education books included in the CBSE syllabus "on the lines of action taken against the controversial book by American author James Laine on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj," he said.

There were noisy scenes in the House as members of the opposition and treasury benches shouted slogans even as the minister rose to make the statement.

Vociferous legislators expressed their sentiments against introduction of sex education as a subject in the school syllabus.

They tore the CBSE books on the subject in the House. The members rushed to the well and gheraoed the minister, resulting in the House being adjourned fo 30 minutes.

After the House resumed proceedings, the minister announced the 'ban' on concerned CBSE books adding, that the proposed 'adolescence life skills' programme, which was to have been implemented from the next academic year, was being cancelled.
