Describing the Supreme Court judgement staying a central law providing reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions as 'retrograde', the Communist Party of India on Thursday sought the intervention of Parliament for ensuring social justice.

"It is a retrograde judgement. It will not help in the implementation of policies for establishment of social justice and equality. The Parliament has to intervene effectively," party national secretary D Raja told PTI.

He said the government should have intervened when the apex court questioned the ninth schedule of the Constitution. "Time has come for the Parliament to have an effective say on this. It cannot be left to the judiciary," he added.

Reacting to the judgement, CPI general secretary A B Bardhan said, "The policy of the government and the desire of the people as decided earlier should continue." He hoped that the Supreme Court will take these into consideration.

He hoped that the UPA government will take 'effective steps' in the wake of the judgement staying the law providing for 27 percent reservation for OBCs in elite educational institutions like IITs and IIMs.
