Congress on Thursday said former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao was wrong in trusting the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bharatiya Janata Party in 1992 during the crisis over the disputed structure in Ayodhya.

"Narasimha Rao, unfortunately, believed those people, who should not have been believed. It was certainly a mistake. Rao had himself admitted that he was misled on the affidavit filed by the VHP and the BJP leaders," Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh told reporters.

He was responding to questions on the sidelines of a function here on Rahul Gandhi's remarks that Babri demolition would not have taken place had a member of Nehru-Gandhi family been in politics at that time.

To a question on the criticism that Rahul's comments were an indictment of Congress itself, he said, "It was not indictment. The conditions were different."
