The issue of police firing in Nandigram in West Bengal stalled proceedings in Parliament for the fourth day on Monday with both Houses adjourning.

As soon as the Lok Sabha assembled for the day, angry BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal members trooped into the well raising slogans against the Left Front government in West Bengal and demanding the suspension of Question Hour.

Repeated requests by Deputy Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal failed to restore normalcy forcing him to adjourn the House.

Atwal maintained that no adjournment motion on a state subject could be allowed.

In the Rajya Sabha, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj raised the issue as soon as the House met for the day.

She said a BJP delegation had visited Nandigram and the party wanted to explain the situation in the House for which the Question Hour should be suspended.

Lone Trinamool Congress member Dinesh Trivedi also raised the matter.

Sensing the mood, Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat adjourned the House.
