With the CBI already making a major breakthrough by arresting ten suspects and seizing a stockpile of arms, the agency said on Sunday that its probe into the police firing was heading in the right direction.

"Our investigations are satisfactory till now, we are still carrying on with our work, let's see how it progresses," a member of the CBI team told PTI.

He also confirmed the major breakthrough on Saturday evening when ten suspects were picked up from a brick kiln field at Khejuri village in Nandigram block.

The CBI team also discovered a stockpile of arms and ammunition from the place where the ten suspects were hiding, probably since the firing incident on March 14.

They were later handed over to the local police and East Mindapore Superintendent of Police G A Srinivas said all ten were formally arrested.

The SP, however, declined to specify the political affiliation of those arrested but locals allged that all of them belonged to the CPI-M and were not from the district. A local CPI-M activist, however, denied that arrested persons were party men.

The police also said 14 improvised firearms and 500 rounds of assorted ammunition were seized by the CBI team from a brick kiln. Also seized were binoculars and cellphones as well as some helmets, generally used by policemen.
