The Central government on Friday said the overall situation in Nandigram in West Bengal, where clashes with police left 14 people dead and 67 injured, was under control.

"There is high tension prevailing in the area, but the situation is currently under control. The overall situation is reported to be under control," Home Minister Shivraj Patil told the Lok Sabha.

Asserting that the Centre was in constant touch with the state government, Patil promised all possible help to restore complete peace and normalcy in the area.

The West Bengal government has been asked to provide all necessary relief and help to the next of kin of the deceased and the injured, the minister said, adding that state administration had been asked to contact all concerned so that peace and normalcy was established.

Police camps have been set up in the disturbed area and senior police officials are camping and making efforts to restore peace, he said in a statement.
