Class XII students will now study world politics first before the textbook on Indian politics is taken up, with NCERT deciding to change the sequence in which the subjects are taught.

The decision has been taken as per the recommendation of the National Monitoring Committee of NCERT that reviews the curricula from time to time.

The NMC, in its meeting on December 16, had recommended the interchange of textbooks according to which contemporary world politics course should be taken up first to be followed by the course on Indian politics.

"The reason for the change is that several world events and developments have connections with or references in the book on Indian politics. Hence, Indian politics can be better understood after getting a world perspective," an NCERT official said.

Contemporary world politics covers various topics, including the cold war era, US dominance in politics, alternative centres of economic and political power, South Asia in post-cold war era, international organisations in unipolar world, security in contemporary world and globalisation and its critics.

The book on Indian politics comprises major happenings in the political arena in the post-Independence era.

It covers topics like era of one-party dominance, politics and planned developments, India's external relations, challenge to and restoration of Congress system, crisis of Constitutional order, regional aspirations and conflicts, rise of new social movements, democratic uprising and coalition politics and recent issues and challenges.
