Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the Central Bureau of Investigation probe against him and his family members for allegedly amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income.

Mulayam Singh, who filed an application for modification of the judgment for the preliminary inquiry by the agency, has sought stay of the investigation till May 31.

The chief minister in his petition said the CBI inquiry be stayed till the Assembly elections in the state were completed.

Mulayam Singh further said he has no faith in the CBI and sought a direction that an independent authority headed by a retired judge of the apex court or a high court conduct the investigation and file its report.

The Samajwadi Party chief sought modification of the March 1 order on directing CBI inquiry against him and his family and submitted that the income tax department may be asked to proceed with the inquiry and only after that any further order be passed.

The apex court on March 1 had directed the CBI to hold a preliminary inquiry against Mulayam Singh, his member of Parliament son Akhilesh, daughter-in-law Dimple and other son Pratik on a public interest litigation filed by a Uttar Pradesh resident Vishwanath Chaturvedi accusing them of amassing wealth by illegal means.
