The Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance regained power in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation after a span of five years with its candidates winning the polls for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor on Monday.

BJP's Deorao Umredkar polled 71 votes to prevail over his only rival Deepak Pendham of Congress-led alliance, 'Secular Democratic Front' for the mayor's post.

Pendham got 60 votes. Kishore Kumeria of Shiv Sena secured equal number of votes (71), while Kamil Ansari of the Nationalist Congress Party managed to muster 57 votes to finished runners-up in the deputy mayor's election.

During mayor's poll, four members of the Bahujan Samaj Party remained absent at the time of voting. Two members of Bahujan Republican Ekta Manch remained neutral and did not vote during election of deputy mayor.

Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, whose two members were among 135 members present in the House, extended support to the Congress front. Nana Shamkule, a senior member of the House, was in chair.

The elections of Nagpur Municipal Corporation were held last month along with nine other civic bodies in the state. NMC has become the first civic body in the entire state to elect its first citizen.
