Rashtriya Janata Dal MP from Siwan Mohammed Shahabuddin gets three years' rigorous imprisonment in a vehicle theft case, but gets acquitted in another case of kidnapping (of former MLA Viren Pandey) and extortion for lack of evidence.

Special Judicial Magistrate V V Gupta read out the verdict. Shahabuddin is currently lodged in Siwan jail. The hearing in this case was concluded on Friday.

The court officials told rediff.com that the court found him guilty of stealing a vehicle that was recovered from his residence. "Shahabuddin was convicted under Section 411 and 414 of the IPC in this case" court officials said.

The special court had been constituted in Siwan jail in 2006 by the state government to conduct the trial and to hear the criminal cases lodged against the RJD MP. Shahabuddin is facing nearly 40 criminal cases including murder, abduction, violation of the Foreign Exchange Act, the Arms Act, power theft, and Wildlife Violation Act.

It was for the first time in March 2007 year that Shahabuddin, was convicted in connection with a criminal case relating to an attack on the local office of CPI (ML).

Last month the special court awarded a life sentence to Shahabuddin in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Chhote Lal Gupta, a CPI(ML) worker.
