Sri Lankan supersonic jets pounded two suspected Tamil Tiger camps in the island's northeast on Thursday morning, the defence ministry said.

Shortly after the air strikes, the guerrillas set off a powerful land mine in the Jaffna peninsula, killing an army officer and a soldier who were on a motorcycle patrol, the defence ministry said.

The jets destroyed two camps of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in Mullaitivu district, the ministry said in a statement.

Similar air attacks were carried out on Wednesday too, military officials said.
