The by-election to the Tamil Nadu Assembly from Madurai-West constituency ended peacefully with a polling percentage of 75.34 per cent, state Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said in Madurai on Tuesday night.

The final polling percentage was four per cent higher than that of 2006 Assembly polls, he told reporters.

Gupta said that there were some minor incidents adding, these did not interfere with the poll process.

He said deployment of paramilitary forces in polling booths helped in peaceful conduct of the election. The state police also did a good job in maintaining law and order, he added.

Complaints have been received from various parties, including the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam about bogus voting and they would be taken note of, the official said.

He dismissed the view that the Election Commission had taken too many steps unnecessarily for the bypoll, leading to some political parties criticising it.

"It is not that EC has introduced the extraordinary measures in Madurai-West only. We grow by experience during every poll and all the measures had been introduced in other states of the country as well. It is unfair to criticise the EC," he said.
