Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday filed her nomination for bypolls to one of the two vacant seats in the Legislative Council and is set to win.

UP Minister Swami Prasad Maurya also filed his papers on Monday on the last day filing nominations and is also certain to win as only two nominations have been filed for the two vacant seats in the council.

The seats had fallen vacant following deaths of Bahujan Samaj Party member B R Verma and Samajwadi Party member Vikramaditya Pandey recently.

Mayawati filed her nomination for the seat fallen vacant owing to the death of Pandey, whose term expires on June 30, 2009.

Maurya filed his papers for the other seat. The chief minister, who is currently not a member of the either House of the state Legislature, filed two sets of nomination papers, each proposed by 10 legislators.

The nomination papers would be scrutinised on Tuesday and the last date of withdrawal would be June 28.

The results would be formally announced on July 5.

Later, speaking to reporters, Mayawati said that she had opted for the council as she wanted to concentrate on the development of all 403 Assembly constituencies in the state.

"If I had contested from any particular Assembly seat, there would have been allegations that I was developing only one constituency," she said.
