All set to leave the Rashtrapati Bhavan, President A P J Abdul Kalam said he wants to be remembered as the "people's President".

The 76-year-old scientist-turned-President, who demits the highest Constitutional office next month, said this in response to a question in an interaction with PTI journalists at its headquarters on Saturday.

Kalam, who has been hugely popular with the masses, especially the youth, during his five-year tenure as President, said it had been his endeavour to transform Rashtrapati Bhavan into a "people's Bhavan".

"Rashtrapati Bhavan has become a people's Bhavan today. I believe it should be an example for the nation," said Kalam, who fondly highlighted the beauty of the Presidential palace, particularly the 127 varieties of roses in its famous Mughal Garden.

He said due to the transformation of image of the Rashtrapati Bhavan, half a million to one million people visited the sprawling palatial complex every year.

"Not only big guns, but small guns also. I don't want to convert the Rashtrapati Bhavan into a political Bhavan," Kalam said.
