The death toll due to heavy rains and flash floods caused by a deep depression in Andhra Pradesh has risen to 41 on Saturday morning, according to the official count.

A senior officer in Disaster Management Department told rediff.com that "41 deaths have occurred so far, including 20 in Kurnool district, 5 in Guntur, 4 in Prakasam and the rest in seven other districts. Out of eight missing persons, six were found safe and two are still missing."

He said that as many as 56,479 people were evacuated from low-lying areas to safer places and lodged in 95 relief camps in Kurnool, Guntur, Prakasam and Mahbubnagar districts.

Hyderabad Meteorological Centre Director Dr Satya Kumar said, "The deep depression is weakening into depression. Now, the depression is centred 50 km west of Hyderabad. Due to its impact, there is moderate to heavy rainfall at a few places in Rayalaseema and Telangana and isolated places in coastal Andhra Pradesh."

"Kurnool district is worst-affected with 30 to 40 cm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. Prakasam and Guntur come next with 15 to 20 cm of rainfall during the same period," he said.
