It was a close shave for Karbi Anglong Hill district Superintendent of Police Anurag Tangkha when two Central Reserve Police Force men were killed and five others injured in an attack carried out by tribal ultras in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Two CRPF personnel were killed on the spot in the attack, while the SP had a close shave. Four other CRPF men and a commando of Assam Police were also injured in the incident.

Police informed that suspected militants belonging to the Karbi Longri North Cachar Liberation Front ambushed the convoy of the senior police official at a place called Dongkamokam under Howraghat police station of the hill district in Assam.

The district police superintendent was returning to district headquarters at Diphu in a convoy of CRPF and Assam police personnel after carrying out a night-long raid operation against tribal insurgents in an interior location in the hill district.

Police have launched a combing operation in the area following the attack of the SP's convoy.

The hill district is infested with tribal militants belonging to more than one group. The KLNLF is most active among these groups.

Many of these tribal militant groups enjoy patronage from big groups like the United Liberation FRont of Asom and Naga rebel outfits. The groups allegedly arrange for training and weapons for the tribal militant outfit in exchange of huge amounts of money.
