With constituent assembly polls in Nepal a few months away, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon on Thursday discussed the issue with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Berlin with both promising to help in smooth democratic transition in the Himalayan country.

"Both leaders said they looked forward to helping Nepal achieve its democratic transition in a peaceful and orderly manner," Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon told media persons after the meeting.

Nepal is going to have elections to the constituent assembly in November and India and the UN are closely coordinating to help in this process.

Ahead of the elections, the UN is involved in the crucial task of managing arms of the Maoists who have shunned the path of violence to join the mainstream as part of a deal.

Ban said the UN would do whatever it could to help the process of elections.

Singh and Ban also discussed the issue of climate change over which concerns are growing globally and is going to be a dominant theme at Friday's G-8 Summit.

The UN chief said he intends to have a meeting of world leaders just before the UN General Assembly in September to discuss the issue of climate change, Menon said.

Singh assured India's full cooperation in preservation of the climate.

"We are very interested in strengthening the UN capacity to fulfill its goal especially in areas like climate change and UN is the right forum to address this issue," the prime minister told Ban.
