Rs 5 lakh aid for police firing victims' kin

The Andhra Pradesh government on Sunday announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh each to the families of the persons killed in Saturday's police firing in Khammam district.

The government also ordered the suspension of the circle inspector and the sub-inspector of police, holding them responsible for the police firing, in which six persons were killed and eight others sustained bullet injuries.

Briefing media persons after Chief Minister Dr Y S Rajasekhar Reddy chaired an emergency meeting of the state cabinet, Home Minister K Jana Reddy said that the government has also decided to give a government job to one member each from the firing victims' families. The government will also allot them houses and provide free education to their children.

The government will bear all the expenses of medical treatment for all the eight persons injured in the police firing. The grievously injured persons will be provided ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 each and those who suffered minor injuries would be given Rs 10,000
each.

Two of the critically injured persons have been shifted from Khammam district hospital to Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences at Hyderabad for treatment.

On Saturday, the chief minister had announced a judicial probe into the police firing, transfer of Khammam District Superintendent of Police Rajeev Kumar Meena and suspension of Additional Superintendent of Police M Ramesh Babu.    

Jana Reddy said that Additional Director-General of Police (Human Rights) Lokendra Sharma has been deputed to Khammam for a departmental inquiry into the police firing. Based on the inquiry report that stern action will be initiated against those police personnel held responsible for using excessive force.

However, he said that no decision was taken on the demand for booking murder cases under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code against the police personnel who opened fire.
