Almost the entire city of Kolkata remained waterlogged on Wednesday due to intermittent rain in last 48 hours throwing road and rail traffic out of gear as the heavy downpour claimed ten lives in West Bengal.

One person was electrocuted on Wednesday in South 24 Parganas district as heavy rains lashed the city. The weatherman predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places in Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata, in the next 48 hours due to formation of a low pressure area over North East Bay of Bengal.

The weather office has recorded 174 mm of rain, while the city experienced 189 mm rainfall on Tuesday, caused by formation of a low-pressure area over Northeast Bay of Bengal.

The weatherman predicted heavy rainfall in entire Gangetic West Bengal in next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, life in the metropolis was seriously affected for the second day on Wednesday with last night's rains compounding the situation even as the civic body struggled to drain out accumulated water with its 20 pumps.

Rainwater, which clogged most of the city links almost, disrupted surface transport with trams out of service for the second day on Wednesday.

Train services on both Eastern and South-eastern Railways in Sealdah and Howrah divisions continued to be affected due to overtopped tracks forcing either short-termination or cancellation of some of the trains, railway sources said.

The Circular rail services continued to be affected for the second day but the Metro services plied.

Seven members of a family died when their hut collapsed in the rains at Nohazari village in South 24 Parganas district and a housewife was killed in another house collapse in the same district.
