One person was killed in police firing during communal violence in Bangalore after a Viraat Hindu Samjotsav meeting on Sunday evening, a senior police official said.

At least three buses were set afire and scores of vehicles were also damaged in the violence.

Splinter groups of the main procession branched out and resorted to stone-throwing, attacking shops, vehicles and buses, City Police Commissioner N Achut Rao told PTI.

"The situation as of now is under control," he said after the Viraat Hindu Samojtsav ended at Murphy town in the Cantonment area of the city where two similar public meetings organised by the RSS to mark the birth centenary of its leader late Golwalkar passed off without any incident.

Rao said police had to use lathicharge and teargas to quell violence. Prohibitory orders are in force in the affcted localities, he said.

Uneasy calm had prevailed in Shivajinagar and Bhartinagar since Friday last after a protest against the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein turned violent, leaving some 50 persons injured and an equal number of vehicles damaged.

Some 7,000 policemen were deployed mostly in sensitive areas of the cantonment where Virat Hindu Samjotsav meetings were held.

Shops and other commercial establishments downed shutters in the violence-affected areas soon after tension spread there.
