A former US lawmaker on Tuesday visited Nithari, the scene of grisly serial killings, and said he suspected an organ trade angle in the horrific incident.

Democrat Walter Fauntary, a former member of the US Congress, met members of bereaved families and said he would work towards unravelling the mystery behind the killing of children and women.

He said he suspected the macabre crime was part of a booming international trade of organs and rubbished allegations that suspects Mohinder Singh Pandher and his servant Surender Kohli were paedophiles.

"These people are not paedophiles. The truth needs to be brought to light to save our children. I will work towards this," Fauntary told reporters in Noida.

He said he also planned to raise the issue of organ trade at international fora.

Usha Thakur, a social activist who helped villagers file FIRs of missing children in the area, alleged that reports projecting the suspects as paedophiles were meant to divert attention from suspected organ trade.

"The authorities are trying to divert attention by portraying Mohinder and Surender as paedophiles and cannibals. This theory will actually save a lot of influential people who are part of the organ trade," she said.
