ULFA killings: PM announces aid

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday announced compensation of Rs two lakh, in addition to the Rs three lakh announced by the Assam government, for kin of those killed by the United Liberation Front of Assam, as the Centre decided to rush 1,000 more paramilitary troops for operations in the state.

The assurance of additional compensation was given by the prime minister to six parliamentarians from Assam accompanied by Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, who met him to discuss the situation in the state.

Promising all possible help from the Centre, Dr Singh informed the parliamentarians that he was seized of the situation.

The decision to despatch 10 companies of forces for counter-insurgency operations is in addition to the deployment of 20 companies of Central forces in Assam, which has witnessed the killing of 69 migrant workers since Friday, home ministry sources said.

The delegation of parliamentarians asked the prime minister to render all possible help to restore normalcy and communal harmony in Assam.
