After being closed for about a month while authorities took action against "criminal elements", the Lucknow University reopened on Wednesday for examinations and classes in the law and management courses.

The campus was abuzz with activities again with students in large numbers thronging the university.

University spokesman Manoj Dixit told PTI that classes in law and management faculties resumed on Wednesday on a peaceful note with good presence of students in classes.

He said that undergraduate and post-graduate classes would resume from January 11.

The university was closed by Vice-Chancellor Prof R P Singh citing his inability to control "lawlessness" in the campus "owing to non-cooperation by the administration" on December 8 after students went on a rampage to protest the implementation of Lyngdoh Committee recommendations on union elections.

The VC had also declared a moratorium on students union elections and suspended as many as 229 students, of which 62 were later expelled.

Meanwhile, Singh said action would be taken against teachers with "criminal background." Teachers skipping classes would also be taken care of, he said.
