The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday nudged the Congress out of power in Uttarakhand, but fell short of a majority by just one seat in the 70-member Assembly, and was set to form the new government by possibly taking help from the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal and some independents.

The BJP won in 34 of the 69 constituencies where elections were held, while Congress bagged only 21 seats.

The Bahujan Samaj Party won eight seats, one seat more than its tally in the outgoing Assembly. The UKD got three seats while three independents -- mostly Congress rebels -- also tasted victory.

"We can give support to BJP," UKD spokesman Shivanand Chamoli said.

Elections to Bajpur constituency were countermanded due to the death of a Congress candidate.
