Jammu and Kashmir police on Monday foiled a militants's plan to blow up a police station in Anantnag district town by defusing a car laden with 50 kgs Improvised Explosive Device.

The car laden with a large quantity of explosives was detected by a police party outside a police station in a southern Anantnag district town, 52 kms from Srinagar, on Monday afternoon, official sources said.

They said the area was immediately cordoned off and the local unit of the bomb disposal squad defused the explosive-laden car.

The IED, loaded in a brass bucket and weighing about 50 kgs, was taken out of the car and in a nearby open space, a controlled explosion was carried out, which shook the buildings in the adjoining areas and shattered glass panes of the windows, the sources said.

They said preliminary investigations have shown that the registration number plate on the car was fake and actually belonged to a motorcycle registered in the name of a person from Shalimar area of the city.

The sources said the alertness of police personnel frustrated militants' plan to set off the blast thus averting major loss of life and property.
