Should adulterers be let off lightly?
February 14, 2007

Adultery may soon just be a social offence than a crime.

According to the draft National Policy on Criminal Justice authored by the Madhava Menon committee, treating an adulterer as a criminal actually becomes an obstacle in any rapprochement between husband and wife, besides making the accused vulnerable to extortionist policemen.

The committee draft comes as a shot in the arm for the National Commission for Women that had sought to de-criminalise adultery by recommending that it be treated as a social rather than a criminal offence.
