Second phase Manipur polls tomorrow

The second phase of elections for the Manipur Assembly will be held on Wednesday in 29 constituencies at Imphal East, West and Bishenpur districts.

The fate of three former chief ministers will be decided. About 738679 people would exercise their franchise in 827 polling stations.

A total of 181 stations have been described as hypersensitive and 646 as sensitive, officials said.

Six women candidates of total 155 candidates are in the fray for the second phase.

The Congress has 29 candidates, Bhartiya Janta Party 9, Communist Party of India 16, Communist Party of India (Marxist) one, National Congress Party 17, MPP 25, Rashtriya Janata Dal 17, Janata Dal-United one, and the JD(Secular) two.

The second phase of elections would be concentrated in the Manipur valley. In the first phase elections held on Feb eight at 19 Assembly segments at Thoubal, Ukhrul and Senapati districts about 85 percent poll was reported.

The third phase of elections will be held on February 23 at 12 Assembly segments of Jiribam sub-division, Churachandpur, Tamenglong and Chandel districts.

Massive security arrangements were taken up in view of the elections.
