Peace prevailed in Indore city of Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday as curfew was lifted in four areas and relaxed for two hours in seven other violence-hit localities to allow women to make necessary purchases in seven other violence hit localities, police said.

As many as 163 persons were rounded up for their alleged involvement in rioting that injured seven persons on Monday, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Indore) Madhu Kumar Babu told PTI.

Curfew was lifted in Raoji Bazar, Sadar Bazar, Central Kotwali and Sarafa areas where prohibitory orders under Section 144 were still in place, he said, adding that curfew restrictions were relaxed for two hours in seven localities, including Chhatripura, Pandarinath and Malharganj areas.

The situation remained peaceful and women turned in large numbers to buy essential goods, Additional District Magistrate Rameshwar Gupta said.

Examination hall tickets of students were being considered as curfew pass to allow them to appear in tests being conducted in some schools and colleges, he said.

Violence erupted after two groups pelted stones at each other in the Bombay Bazar area of the city, police said, adding that agitated mobs damaged vehicle and ransacked shops prompting police to fire in the air and lob tear gas shells to gain control.
