The special investigation team probing the alleged killing of civilians in fake police encounters has completed investigations and would file the chargesheet against the accused within two months.

"We were given four cases of missing persons to investigate which went upto five during the investigations. The probe has been completed," deputy inspector general of police Farooq Ahmad, who is supervising the investigations, told PTI on Monday.

Ahmad said the team was now in the proces of documentation and would file the chargesheet against the accused before a court within the stipulated time.

The law requires the police to submit the chargesheet before a court within 60 days of the arrest of the accused.

Six persons, including four police personnel, have been arrested in connection with the alleged fake encounter of civilians by the SOG personnel, Ganderbal, over the past one year.

Among the police personnel arrested are senior superintendent of police, Ganderbal, H R Parihar, his deputy Bahadur Ram, assistant sub inspector Farooq Ahmad Gudoo and constable Farooq Ahmad Paddar.

Parihar and Ram were arrested on Saturday following the exhumation of bodies of two of the five missing persons by the team while Gudoo and Paddar were arrested on January 30 when it was prima facie established the latter was involved in the disappearance of carpenter Abdul Rehman Paddar.

All four policemen have been arrested on charges of abduction and murder.

The cases of custodial disappearances came to light when police investigating the missing case of the carpenter found that ASI Gudoo had given Paddar's mobile phone to a person of Hajan in Bandipora area.

The carpenter had gone missing from Batmaloo area of the city on December 8 last year when he was with a constable from his native Larnoo village, Farooq Ahmad Paddar.

The next day, SOG and 42nd battalion of CRPF registered an FIR in Shadipora police station that they had killed Pakistani militant Abu Hafiz of Multan area in an encounter and recovered an AK assault rifle and some ammunition.

However, as soon as the body was exhumed on Thursday, his father identified him as that of his missing son.

Nazir Ahmad Deka, Ghulam Nabi Wani, Ali Mohammad Paddar (all from Kokernag area) and Showkat Ahmad Kataria from Banihal area were also reported missing under similar circumstances.

Forensic experts from Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Chandigarh are assisting the speical investigation team in conducting the DNA mapping of the exhumed bodies to match them with the relatives.

The Army and CRPF have ordered separate inquiries into the alleged role of their personnel in these cases as three army units and a CRPF unit had taken part in purported operations with the SOG Ganderbal in which they had claimed to have killed foreign militants and recovered arms and ammunition from them.
